Lesson 02: Oneness of Allah (Tauheed)

Literal Meaning of Oneness Of Allah:

The very first article of faith in Islamic belief is the Unity or Oneness Of Allah. In verbal sense it means, to believe in unity or to believe in oneness!!

Conventional meaning of Unity or Oneness Of Allah:

According to the Islamic code of life,Unity/ Oneness of Allah means to believe in the supremacy of the creator and cherisher of all the worlds and to worship him only; (To believe in the unity of existence of Allah to believe in His attributes and in, the characteristics of his attributes is called Unity or oneness of Allah,

Kinds of oneness of Allah

Followings are the three kinds of Oneness Of Allah.

  • Unity/Oneness in The being of Allah,

  • Unity/ Oneness in The Attributes of Allah,

  • Unity/ Oneness in The Worship of Allah,

i. Unity/ Oneness In The Being Of Allah:

Unity/Oneness in the being of Allah means that there is no any partner in the existence and reality of Allah.

Allah says in Quran:

قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ آحَدَة الله الصمد لم يلدهُ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا اَحَدة

(الاخلاص : 4-1)

Translation:....1. Say (O Muhammad (Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam)): "He is Allâh, (the) One".

  •  "Allâh-us-Samad (the Self-Sufficient master, whom All creatures need, He neither eats nor drinks").

  • "He begets not, nor was He begotten";

  • "And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him."

ii. Unity/ Oneness In The Attributes Of Allah

Unity in the attributes of Allah means that. He enjoys those very perfect characteristics that are no more there in any other being. He is matchless and awesome in His authority, Will power, Sense of hearing, Sense of Seeing, and in all of His attributes. As it is said in holy Quran:

لَيْسَ كيتله شي (الشوری: 11)

Translation: "There is nothing like unto Him."

Translation: "Verily, Allâh is Able to do All things.".

Translation: "Truly, Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Knower."

All the attributes of Allah are perfect, from time immemorial and eternal. He is free from any kind of all weakness. He knows the secrets of hearts. He is the Creator and the Master of whole of the universe. All The traits of Allah are His personal ones!!.

iii. Unity in the conditions of the attributes of Allah.

Unity in the conditions of the attributes of Allah means that Allah is the creator of The Universe. He is The cherisher and The Lord of everyone.. All are needy to Him. Only He is to bestow everything. Therefore, it is mandatory for all the creatures that they should worship their creator and Master, all powerful and all knowing, They must not associate any partner with Him. and must not worship anyone else beside him,

It is said in Holy Quran:

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلا لِيَعْبُدُونِ (الدريت: 56)

Translation: "And I (Allâh) created not the jinns and humans except they should Worship Me (Alone).".

iv. Allah in Himself

When we see any created object, our mind is diverted to its creator. When we look at a house, we think about mason: When we look at a watch, we think about watch manufacturer. Why, because we cannot even think that any house can be built without a mason, or any watch can be manufactured without a watch manufacturer .Similarly, when we ponder over the universe, then automatically the thought of its creator comes to mind as it is not possible that such a huge and well organized universe would have come into existence, without any of its creator, just by a chance. In The Holy Quran, the existence of Allah is proved through varied evidence.

The Creator of Universe:

There's no room for any doubt about the creator of the universe as such a huge, organized and perfect system cannot be made by itself without any creator.

Allah says in Holy Quran: ا في الله سلك فاطر السمواتِ وَالْأَرْضِ (ابراہیم :10)

Translation: "Can there be doubt about Allah, Creator of the heavens and earth"?

System and Order:

When the universe is closely looked at, we find perfect system and order in it and there is no disorder anywhere.

Allah Says:

Translation: "3. Who has created the seven heavens one above another, You can see no fault In the creations of the Most Beneficent. Then look again: "Can You see any rifts?"

Then look again and yet again, Your sight will return to You In a state of humiliation and worm out.

Solar System:

The Sun floats in its own orbit and the Moon Floats in its own orbit. The sun doesn't overtake the moon and the moon doesn't overtake the sun. Similarly, there remains the night for a certain period of time and a day remains for a certain period of time.

Allah says:

Translation: 36/ 40. it is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor does the night outstrip the Day. they All float, each In an orbit.

Fixed Order:

There is perfect serenity and absolute order in each and every object of the universe.

It is said by Almighty Allah

Translation: "54/49. Verily, we have created All things with Qadar (Divine Preordainments of All things before, their creation, as written In the Book of decrees Al-Lauh Al-Mahfuz)”.

Pondering Over The System of Universe:

Through law and order of The universe, it appears that there is a supreme being who is the creator of this splendid universal' system. That's why intellectual people are suggested to ponder over this very system.

Allah says:

Translation: 3/190. Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and In the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding.

Ingenuity of Almighty Allah

The attractive and solid system of Day, night, moon, sun, heavens and earh, in which not a tinge of flaw is seen, is all the sign of Allah's wisdom and ingenuity.

Translation: 27/88 (It is) the work of Allah who perfected all things.

The Creation of human being;

The birth of every human being in the world is a tangible proof of the greatness of Allah.

Allah says in Quran:

Translation: "3/6. He it is who shapes You In the wombs as He pleases.".

Translation: 52 1.35. Were they created by nothing, or were they themselves the creators? 36. Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they have no firm Belief.

Witness of the nature of Human Being:

As the heavens and earth, and the whole of the universe provide a witness of the existence of Allah, Similarly, the nature of human being itself has also the same claim.. In the study of human history, the belief in the existence of almighty, all powerful is found in The most civilized and in the most uncivilized nations. It has become clear after the research of the ancient ruins that even the uncultured nations which were there to live in different parts of the world had some sort of faith in the existence of Allah.. It shows that to believe in the existence of Almighty Allah is very much there in the nature of human being.

Allah says in Quran:

و في الْأَرْضِ ايْتُ لِلْمُوْقِنِينَ وَفِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ فَلَا تُبْصِرُونَ (الذاريات :21:20)

Translation: 51/ 20. And on the earth are signs for those who have faith with certainty, 21. And also In Your own selves. Will you not then see?

Rational Proof:

The mighty creator of the universe is only one The absolute meditation of a human being makes him believe that there is no God but Allah.. Why because, If there would have been more than one Illah then the system of the universe' would have never ever survived because of their personal / mutual interests,

Allah says !!

Translation: 21/ 22. Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allâh, Then Verily both would have been ruined.
